Use our program finder to find one that fits your educational needs. Note that you can apply to only one program per admission term. Please review details in the Apply Via Cal State Apply row below.
*See the "How to Apply to a Credential Program" section below for more detailed instructions.
Two applications are often required for prospective students: one to the university and the other to the individual graduate program. While CSUN sets minimum requirements for admission, each of our graduate programs will have its own criteria. This may include GPA, test scores, pre-requisite classes and recommendation letters. You can find requirement information on the program page, its department website or catalog listing.
Applications for admission to CSUN graduate and credential programs are accepted starting Oct. 1 for the fall and Aug. 1 for the spring. University application deadlines vary by program. Use the CSU Application Dates & Deadlines tool to find individual closing dates.
The additional application to an individual program, as well as transcript and other document deadlines, may differ for each program. Visit the program's department website for specific dates.
Once you know your program requirements and deadlines, start gathering the materials you need. You will need a copy of your transcripts, test scores, household annual income and your Social Security number, if you have one.
You may also need additional materials based on your graduate or credential program requirements. Please check your department requirements to determine where to send these items. The additional items may include:
As soon as you submit your Cal State Apply application, you’ll need to send official transcripts and possibly additional supplemental materials required by your graduate program. Please review the next three rows.
Create an account and complete your application on Cal State Apply, the CSU's online application system. Be sure to carefully review your information and all sections of the application before submitting.
Please note:
You can apply to as many campuses as you wish, each with a $70 application fee, but you can only apply to one program per campus per admission term. Select only one state-supported or one self-supported extension program in Cal State Apply because a refund will not be available if you apply for two programs or submit two separate applications for the same term. Please choose your program carefully.
You must submit official college transcripts to the Office of the Registrar. Be sure to send:

After you apply, you'll receive an email from CSUN with the information you'll need to activate your CSUN Portal. Once you've set up an account, you can check your application status. Each department has its own criteria for admissions and will notify you when it has reached a decision.
You will be considered for admission to CSUN as a graduate student when you meet both university and individual program eligibility requirements.
You must first meet the following university requirements:
You must also meet the higher admission standard of the individual graduate program.
CSUN will first review your application to be sure you meet university standards. Then your application will be reviewed by the appropriate graduate department. The department will then determine if you meet the criteria for admission to its graduate program.
*CSUN’s admissions criteria for prospective credential students are similar to those for graduate students. Before applying, please review How to Apply to a Credential Program below.
