The DMV issues two types of handicapped parking placards: permanent, #1-which lasts for 5 years; and temporary, #2- which lasts from 1 to 6 months. Person is eligible if he or she is unable to walk 200 feet without stopping to rest; if the ability to walk is severely limited due to arthritic, neurological, or orthopedic condition; unable to walk without an assistive device; has a lung or heart condition; uses portable oxygen; or is blind or severely impaired. The form must be filled out, signed by the doctor, and returned to DMV with the $5 application fee. Applications are available in the license plate renewal office or online.
